影片講述的是一匹野性不羈的野種小公馬，在無(wú)拘無(wú)束地穿越美國(guó)邊境地區(qū)時(shí)的冒險(xiǎn)經(jīng)歷。第一次遇見(jiàn)人的小馬斯比瑞特(Spirit)即使與年輕、勇敢的土著人(Lakota)利特爾-克里克(Little Creek)成了好朋友時(shí)，也不愿被征服。這匹無(wú)畏、年輕的小馬在成為舊時(shí)西部最杰出、未被贊頌過(guò)的英雄之一的過(guò)程中，還與一匹漂亮的母馬雷恩(Rain)墜入了愛(ài)河。
